LIDIA WOOLERY

Paired With: Louise “Luanne” Rogers

Bloom

My name is Lidia Woolery. Currently, I am a sophomore studying Environmental and Interior Design at Syracuse University. In my free time, I love being creative through drawing, painting, or a mixture of both. Louise Ann (Luanne) Rogers was on her way home from studying art in London, England when she was killed on the Pan Am 103 flight in December of 1988. She enjoyed painting, sculpturing, and photography. Her dream was to design clothes after she graduated. People who knew her described her personality as colorful, funny, feisty, determined, hardworking, and creative. She did “everything with style” and always left a positive impact on anyone she met. In my piece, I aimed to represent Luanne Roger’s lively nature and passion for the arts through a field of growing flowers. The flowers are a metaphor for the bright future that was stolen from her. She had so much more growing to do ahead of her as she set towards pursuing her passion for clothing design. I strategically selected tulips because they symbolize hope, statice flowers because they symbolize remembrance, and chrysanthemums because they symbolize happiness and love—two traits that Luanne Rogers embodied greatly. I used vibrant colors to resemble her radiant personality. On some of the petals and leaves, I incorporated pieces of fabric to represent her dream of designing clothes. Next Spring, I plan to go abroad to Florence, Italy. As a student who will be in the exact same shoes as Luanna Rogers with similar dreams ahead, I plan to live out my experience in Italy as a tribute to Luanne Rogers and the bright future she never had the opportunity to “bloom” into.
