Timothy Michael Cardwell was a junior in Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. He was also a part of the ROTC program and was passionate about theater. These two opposing environments that Timothy was a part of harnessing the same thrill-seeking expressive energy that he radiated. In my position as the artist selected to represent Timothy, I found it to be crucial to convey these two sides of his life. The geometric shapes feature many right angles and are contrasted by the highly energetic curvilinear graphics, conveying the juxtaposition of his regimented life as a devoted ROTC student and award-winning acting career.

“There was always a sense of barely controlled force within him, like the caged strength of a young leopard”

This quote was used to strengthen my interpretation of Timothy. Someone who has their paratrooper wings, as well as a strong passion for the stage, is undoubtedly in search of the freedoms of life; I placed this concept of freedom that Timothy lived with at the highest importance to convey through the artwork. The graphics were designed with a focus on energy being emitted from an entity and included many abstracted notions. The circular piece of the sculpture is removable to allow the audience to interact with the artwork and “reveal” the energy behind Timothy. This is also present with the polished metal pieces that feature a rusty side of the metal to bond his structured ROTC lifestyle with the flexible, personality-detaching lifestyle. This symbol of freedom that Timothy has created with his life is a work of art in and of itself.
