In the cemetery on Catawba Island, a small island community on the coast of Lake Erie in Ohio stands a memorial to the late Peter Peirce. Peirce was a talented architect, a caring father, and a loving husband, and his wife, Cherry, erected this memorial to symbolize his passion for architecture as a form of artistic expression, and to symbolize that his story was left incomplete when he was killed in the terrorist bombing of flight Pan Am 103. The original sculpture stands incomplete, a testament to a life unfinished and dreams unachieved. With this piece, I wanted to show that while Peter's story was left unfinished, those who remember him have worked to fill in the gaps, to help ensure that Peter lives on, that his story never ends, and is always growing. By acting forward in his memory, we are working to finish the living memorial, each person adding to it, a brushstroke or a bit of clay. While I am by no means a sculptor or architect, I am honored to do my part to act forward and to carry on Peter's memory in a medium that he was passionate about.
